I have some brownish algae apearing on my glass. I am scrubbing it off daily.

Is this a fairly common issue with newer tanks?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yes, it's just a film algae, sometimes called blue/green algae. If nutrient levels are maintained appropriately the algae will not grow as fast. Mag floats are your friend. There are products that reduce the intensity of the bloom but now worth an intervention on a young tank.

+1 sounds like diatoms (describes almost 100,000 species)

Completely normal for new tanks. Mag floats are definitely your friend.

Sometimes I'll put a thin piece of filter pad between the wet magnet and the glass, cleans that film algae right off even faster

Zesty's picture had a papertowel between the glass and the outside magnet to wipe the outside of the glass everytime you wipes the inside. I only know because i do the same thing and commented on it myself. It works like a charm too. ;)
