I've had a 40 breeder setup for approximately 6 weeks. I've noticed over these last 2-3, brown algae has began to grow on the sand. Most of what I read says this is normal within the usual cycling process. Any input or suggestions are welcome. I'll post some photos.

    Edit:
Here's a photo of the algae.

It sounds like brown diatoms, it is completely normal during the cycling period of the tank. It will go away after the cycle(once all the silicates are used).

    Have a good day!

As mentioned, normal at the start of a tank. Silicates are the culprits, generally introduced via make up water. But like all nuisance algae’s DOC’s, nitrates, and phosphates simply add fuel to the fire. Solutions after the cycle; use RO/DI and a quality salt mix

I've only used RO from the local fish store.

    Thanks for the feedback, folks.
