Brown diatom

    Is brown diatom bacteria, due to too less lighting or too much..?

    Brown diatom is an algae and it's usually present in newer tanks or in tanks with high phosphates and silicates. That being said, all tanks have diatom algae, it's just a matter of keeping it in check :)

    Borwn diatome growth us useualy contibuted to over lighting,
    try cutting light time to > 8 hours total.
    And make sure phosphates are are barely readible.(0 ppm is optimal)


    Most times though it's nothing more that over lighting,

    Tank is 2 months old & i have 234watt t5 on 8 hours a day, this ok?

    I thought brown diatom was a bacteria,not an algae or am i just a noob with the wrong info?...lol

    It's just part of the cycle, Stingray. It will pass in a few weeks. Cut back an hour or 2 on the lighting like wildreef said, don't overfeed, and do your partial water changes.

    is also a pain in the hiend end I just got through scrubbing mine...lol
    heck leave the lights off as much is possible, and avoid using actinic only it's
    worst
