does anyone know what would cause a brown film to form on the surface of my water? i just got back from vacation and it was there and it also seems like there are a few spots of red slime but i did a 10 percent change a week ago. I have to test my parameters tomorrow but does anyone have a guess?

You need more surface agitation if there's a film on the water. Point a powerhead up towards the surface to get rid of it.

And you need more water movement anywhere where cyano is forming, if that slime is cyano.

Good point. If he has one, it's not listed in his sig with his other equipment.

A skimmer would remove that crud.

    cocoa powder or

more likely protien based waste trapped by surface tension ( its the same stuff the skimmer removes)

more water movement may help with both of these issues IMO
