So I noticed this morning a brown film on the glass. Anybody know what it is.

Most likely Diatoms. Fairly common in new systems. Feeds on silicates initially released by plastics. Will disappear once the silicates are used up. Fighting it usually prolongs it's existence; however, you can clean the glass. :)

No, not typical at all for them to return once they're gone.

could also be the start of cyano no? when you clean it does it dilute into the water column like dust specs would or does it tend to filament together?

Yes it's been running for about a month or so. No need to worry then?

nope, a month is about right to see some yucky stuff. I have a pretty old system but have read a lot about new systems and have seen where people report various algae stages with diatoms usually being the first. Just clean the glass for now and keep up with water changes....
