    Diatoms, cyano, and other algae are very common in new tanks. You'll likely see a few different kinds pop up and seem to take over in the next several months up to a year. A skimmer would probably help, and a shorter light cycle will definitely help. It takes about a year for a tank to really become stable.

    Clean up what you can as often as you can, keep up with water changes and try to keep phosphates down and it eventually will get there.
