Does anyone know where the 1 gallon mark would be on the BRS jugs? As in, where should it be filled to before or after the stuff is added to the water?

Leave about 1" from the top of the jug, so just below where the neck cap starts. Make sure you pour the mix in first, then add the water.

you could always put 16 cups of water in it and mark it...

There's the PITA factor that goes along with that, especially since other people know how much should be in there already ;D

Now, I filled the Alk jug with water, but there's a couple chunks on the bottom that aren't dissolving. Is that normal?

Also, I put in the 8 cups of magnesium (5 chloride, 3 sulfate), and that seems like a whole lot for the jug, since it's half full with just the mag. Is that normal too? lol

BRS suggests putting the material in before the water, well at least the Mg anyway. If you have 1g of water in the jug, you won't have any room to add the mixture, the water will overflow out of the jugs.
Here are the videos anyway. :)

my BRS instructions for MG say to fill jug 1/3 water add some Mg, mix, add 1/3 water, add more of the material, mix, add rest of material, top of jug, mix...

If you put 8 cups of material in first, you will have a hard time getting it all to mix.

    lol,
the little bit of space at the top of the jug will not make any difference to the overall mix of the chemicals :)

AS for mixing the magnesium I mixed it up in a 5 gallon pail and then poured it thru a funnel into the BRS jug :)

The magnesium wasn't all too hard to mix. The calcium was super-easy, nearly no effort for it. The alk was the only one I had some issues with, because of a couple stubborn chunks; that's likely why they recommend to mix + pour the alk at the same time. I did them all material-first.
