I just started up my BRS single reactor with GFO and carbon mixed together.
I was wondering if anyone ran their single reactor with the GFO on the bottom of the reactor and the carbon above the GFO held in place with the sponges?

It will certainly work that way- better than nothing at all, but it's not the most efficient method. FTR, GFO works best if tumbled gently, while carbon must remain completely stationary (carbon dust has been linked to HLLE). Also, GFO lasts much longer than carbon.

An GFO will break carbon, cause it is harder, try to get another reactor and run then separate.

With the way he is planning on doing this, it actually should work pretty well IMO. With the BRS, you can add a sponge so the layering would be:

Sponge - GFO (with plenty of space above) - Sponge - Carbon (with no space above, keep it tight) - Sponge.

Because it is an upflow reactor, in theory it should keep the carbon high, however it may actually work better to keep the carbon in the lower section since overtime the carbon could start to fall (and then tumble).

I would try it out and see how it works. As Mr. Bill mentioned, the biggest downside is that you would want to replace the carbon before the GFO (which is why you would want it higher if it does work that way, so you could just replace the carbon). Let us know if you do try it.

My bad, didn't understood his idea and it should work, but still thinking the second reactor is the way to go.
