Would one of the gray brute commercial trash cans (with snap on lid) be ok to store my RODI water in? Concerned about it leeching chemicals or bad stuff.

This is commonly used for both stored RO water, and premixed SW.

I use them as well – I would still suggest you put some water in it and test it after a couple of days just to be certain. Better to be safe than sorry – I have some 35 gallon Tupperware tubs and one leeches phosphates where the other two do not.

They can sometimes leak phosphate. That being said tons of people still use them. The best ones are the containers designed for food storage, they won't release anything into the water.

Phosphates is of no issue. It is the Plasticizer. This is the stuff that make plastic "softer".
And is the cause of men (animal) loosing fertility, and/or may have some yet unknown side effects ;)
Thumb rule, harder plastic is better, and the symbol of food container in the bottom of barrel would be my guidance.

Borge makes a very good point. I won't drink from or store water in any plastic container that is not BPA free. If it's bad for humans, it can't be good for fish/inverts. We store ours in food grade containers.

I hate a brute trash can at first after about a month it sprung a leak. I just got 2 food grade 55 gallon plastic drums. You can prob get 2 for the same price as the garbarge can. Think i payed 25 dollars for both
