I know that purple is good on the live rock but i noticed that there is some dark brown coloration on some of the rock (not all of it).

I am waondering if this is normal or is this algea?

the tank is brand new and the lighting has been to a minimum about 6 hrs a day, except last night my wife left the light on for 12 hours. I have not been using any tap water.

ive also been feeding it phycopure(phtyoplankton mix or green water everyday) a

    re diatoms good or bad?

I have no algea showing up on any of the glass, so I'm just sure.

    thanks for any info.

Sounds like diatoms. How new is your tank? Do you use tap water? How many hours is your light cycle?

im pretty sure the reason why there showing up is because your tank is new, this happens to every tank that goes through the cycle it will eventually go away after it uses all of the silicates from the water. Its not really bad just not so easy on the eyes

i appreciate the info. I am assuming that if i am seeing the rock turn a little brown than my tank is cycleing correctly

yep, i think the diatoms come when the cycle is done or towards the end

also i would have your lights on at least 9 to 10 hours, the only times you want to have it lower then that is if your fighting an algae problem
