I have a 100 gallon saltwater fish tank. Been having problems with the ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and PH. So I went to war. I did a 20 percent water change. I add cycle everyday and put in a Sea-Lab block No. 28 as needed. A week has passed by run the test again and find out the only test with abnormal reading and really high is the Nitrate (tested twice). Call the pet store where I do business and they told me to check my protein skimmer. The protein skimmer is not producing the thick bubbles that in turn will produce the brown waste in the cup. The bubbles are very fine and they do not produced anything as far as waste in the collection cup of the protein skimmer. The brand of the protein skimmer is a Bubble-Magus. I went ahead and purchase at Smart Pet a chemical called Prime by Seachem. It claims it removes Chlorine, Chloramine, Ammonia, Detoxifies Nitrite and Nitrate and added a double dose for the time being. Have 1 blue velvet damsel and 2 dominoes damsels and they seem to be eating well and doing well. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Well what are your nitrate readings? FWIW, higher nitrates in a FOWLR are really not a concern. How much live rock do you have in the tank, and what else do you use for filtration?

How long has the tank been up and running? How long have you been using the skimmer?

^^+2 - please give a little more information on your tank in order for us to try and help-especially how long have you been running the skimmer?

I might suggest to hold off on adding any more products to the tank water at this time because this can further complicate the problem solving.

You also said that the skimmer is producing very fine bubbles... I could be misunderstanding what you mean by fine, but if its a ton of little bubbles, that's not a bad thing. The more bubbles you have no matter the size, the more surface area being skimmed. And if you don't have a foam head at the top of all the little bubbles, then that's why it's not collecting any waste in the cup. And the reason for the lacking foam at the top could be a result of all the additives you've put in the tank. The viatamins I add to my food will kill the foam for a time, and also if I stick my hand in the tank even for just a second, sometimes that will kill the foam. So the reason it's not pulling waste could be a result of something you've added.

I got a Bubble Magus NAC-77 about a year ago, and it puts out tons and tons of little bubbles, and does an amazing job pulling skimmate.

There aren't too many things that can go wrong with a skimmer.(brand is a big factor though)The main problem with most skimmers is the venturi can become clogged.90 percent of the time this is the issue.Nitrates are a natural product of our systems and become a problem when the system is being overfed, underfiltered, low flow/coarse substrate, not been maintained regularly or a combo of these.Newer systems see a rise because we are encouraging its production. If fish are now present I would stop dosing any cycling products. The tank will equalize to your waste production so stockpiling bacteria does nothing as it will eventually starve from lack of food.Add fish very slowly to allow your bacteria the time to reproduce thereby reducing the risk of mini cycles occurring.
You want tiny microbubbles to form in the skimmer and regular maintenance of the cup and body(if needed) will help keep a good head on it.(easyguys)
If Nitrates are high regular water changes are one way. Nitrate export can also be done via the growth of macro algaes, turf scrubbers(my fav),carbon dosing (don't do this unless experienced), DSB's (not a big fan)or chemical media(most expensive doesn't always work).
What and the ammount you are feeding the tank is also important so more info will help.As well as the info already requested including age of the system.
Slow and steady maintenance always works.

This is a marathon not a sprint.;)
Stop adding the block. You have no need for dosing the tank. Regular wc's will accomplish everything you need.
