Also, I have a bubble magnus NAC3 skimmer rather than that junky one shown and I have removed the bio-wheels....

Any suggestions on a bubble trap? I thought of piling a few big rock up in the skimmer section where the water overflows...

I'm having trouble thinking of a reliable way to do this without adding a sheet of plastic/glass. Why don't you want to insert a sheet of plexi?

edit. The only problem I see with adding rocks to your skimmer section is that the water won't be forced through the rocks. It's just going to cascade over the top and carry the microbubbles with it into your return.

The pump is a mag 5 and it probably won't fit with a piece a plexi in there too. What is the minimum space required for a bubble trap?

The minimum spacing on a bubble trap would be the amount of space necessary to accommodate your return pumps flow. If you can afford to lower your skimmer area's water level by maybe an inch what I would do is cut the left half of your skimmer/return baffle about an inch down and insert the bubble trap so that it bisects your return area. Seems solid in theory anyway. If anyone see's any flaws in the idea chime in.

Great idea! But I'm not going to cut anything. I think I'll use magnets to hold a piece of plexi in place in order to divert the water and the build something out of plexi that I can insert to bisect the return area.

Workable idea. Make sure your magnets are really well sealed. They use some wierd rare earth metals in the strong magnets. Not exactly sure what neodymium does in an aquarium.
