Oh ya i forgot to ask, can I use a nitrate coil without having a sump? Where do you get one? Also with all the changes I have been making what are the chances of things improving or is it better to just admit defeat?

You can use a nitrate coil w/o a sump but it will have to a hang on type. Let me see if I can find one on-line so you can see what you should be looking for.

Things will improve now that you're doing more to improve your water quality. If you keep up what you've been doing lately, you shouldn't have any more issues unless you make drastic changes :)

Oh no, no drastic changes. Everything will be slow, don't want anymore problems. I'm gonna cycle some LR in my hubby's 20g and use a few pounds for my tank. We're not in a hurry to use the tank so it is an option.

This denitrator coil can be used in or outside the tank and also in a sump:

    Nitrate Reductor

I'm still looking for a hang on one but they seem to be a rather elusive item!
