So I just set up my first salt water tank, and a sump to go with it... It's a 90g RR with 1'' bulk heads an eheim 1262 tee'd off to my refugium before my return with a ball valve all 1'' piping to give more flow through the twists and turns the reduced to 3/4'' at the bulkhead up.... Then for the overflow it has that adjustable height 1"stand-pipe then the bulkhead and 1'' pipe through a 45* and one more 45* then straight down in to the sump skimmer section... At firstI had the drain pipe under the water level and the water would go fast when it seemed like to create a siphoning effect and the water in the overflow would lower and then when the siphoning effect stopped the water would raise up and water slowed down creating an immense amount of bubbles in the skimmer section with quite a bit of noise... so I took the drain pipe out and cut it to about an 1'' above the water level and now the siphoning effect stopped but the sound of the water from the drain hitting the water in sump is quite annoying and the amount of bubbles is still enought to creat a skimmer effect in the skimmer section where I'm getting a skimmate like foam around the edge of sump..

You can see the drain right behind the skimmer it just dumps right in to the skimmer section this was before I cut it

I also tried to play with amount of flow going to the refugium and the only time the bubbles/noise would stop was when I made all the flow go to the refugium and well I don't think that will work to well in filtering my tank and I also tried to adjust the height of my stand-pipe in the overflow with no results.... IDK what to do... I was thinking of getting a filter sock but I heard nothing but bad things about them being nitrate factories and the holder is pricey $40 for a little plastic sock holder WTH!?!?!

To quiet mine I have the input going down to just below the water surface and I also drilled a whole bunch of 1/4" holes in it to give the water more outlet.I do also use a filter sock over it which I change weekly.I have three socks and just put them in the washer with a little bleach when I have two that need washing. If you would like to try using a sock you probably could zip tie it to the input.

    2 things,

    - adjust your standpipe- check the threads on that

    - For the bottom of the drain
Google 'reverse Durso', and or check out Diver Dan's recent thread about it, pics and everything.

    This can be remedied

I tried adjusting my standpipe earlier, with no results.... I'll give the reverse durso a try tomorrow after a quick trip to home depot.. If anyone has any other input, please feel free to comment

I looked at the thread.. And I can tell just by the way its set-up how it works..... All the air escapes through the tee before exiting the 45*... Do you guys think it will have any benefit/harm by using a "Reducing 90* elbow" they call it a reducing elbow but when you turn it around it goes up a size;)..... so go from 1'' to say 1-1/4'' or 1-1/2'' at the elbow then the tee and then the 45*

I think if you bring it up a size it will slow the flow of water down a bit and give it more time for the air to escape through the tee.. What is everyone else thoughts on this?

I may or may not be understanding you correctly. Let me just tell you that all my plumbing is 1". My reverse durso is all 1 1/4". having it oversized allows more air to escape.

Did that answer your question? Sorry, tired.

yeah I was gonna go up one size at the 90* elbow they make em go from 1'' to 1-1/4 and do the rest of the piping in 1-1/4'' all the way back from there... I figured it would slow the water down a bit, and yes like you said give more time for the air to escape

If anything increasing the size of the plumbing will actually decrease the pressure and increase the velocity. This I am not 100% on. Hopefully powerman or AZdesertrat or somone else will chime in. They're really good with the plumbing and velocity/ back pressure.
