Its so moisture doesn't get in and ruin them. After time they loosen up abit. If you have trouble you can wedge them open with a screw driver.

Spinach. Eating lots o spinach will make the buckets easier to open.

Spinach ? That's what I put my 300lb cuddly frame down to :)
There is no reason to have the lids "welded on" like some of them feel, last night I pulled the "ripper" off my 2nd bucket of the day, and proceeded to "go round" stretching the lid, lugs, and she wasn't budging, eventually after 15 mins of pulling and grunting, I beat the hell out of the bucket with a hammer and only then did the lid come away.

There must be a better way to package bulk salt buckets.

Try being 5'2" 120 lbs. and opening one! LOL I agree in the general premise though, they should be able to package them so that it stays air tight but not such a PITA to open!

I think what Ken is saying is he wouldn't eat spinach if it was deep fried in chocolate sauce. ;DI have opened many a bucket.(wallpaper hanger/painter/reefer)
Try heating up the lid with a hair dryer you wuss.;D
