Okay, Grinder, after reading the 8 page RO/DI questionaire you told me about, my answer remains the same. If you go on CraigsList and find a NAME BRAND unit, you can get out cheaper. The SpectraPure unit is apparently a great unit for the $$$. I spent less, and have the same quality of water as the SpectraPure. No name eBay brands, and units you'd find a WalMart or Lowes/HD are not reef quality. My Typhoon gives the same results as the SpectraPure does, and I didn't have to change my filters until 3 months of use (and it was used prior to me getting it).

There's definitely deals to be had out there. For me, in this hobby, I always like the piece of mind of buying something like an RO/DI unit brand new. Since water quality is one of the foundations of my tank I wanted to know exactly what I was getting, along with the customer support of SpectraPure (which is great). I can't put a price on the security I feel buying things new with warranty, rather than wondering what the last owner did or didn't tell me. Believe me, I've wasted a lot of $ in the SW hobby on second hand things that I ended up never using because of hidden problems, not fun, but just a part of the "as is" trade.

I'm not saying that there isn't other quallity units out the, there definatly is,but(considering budget)i'm just stating that buying a used unit, gutting it and replacing everything typically out weighs the savings.Thats My opinion, and you are intitled to YOUR opinion.

I agree 100%. Just giving another option for "budget-friendly." Honestly after reading Grinder's last RO/DI thread...he had made up his mind about going with SpectraPure. Why the new thread?

Thanks for the great replys. I checked craigslist before even posting this and there isn't a single as for any RO units. I've had faily decent luck on there so i usually check it. i Picked up a BRAND NEW Coralife Aqualight pro with the 150 halide and dual PC actinics for 260. Was still in the box. I want somthing of decent quality so i dont end up having to buy another unit down the line. I'd rather deal with the pest algae problems and having to use the decent well water for a little longer and save for a better unit. That is an awesome deal on the Spectrapure if i can come up with the funds in time.

The Typhoon does not give the same 18.2 megaohm water quality as the Spectrapure units nor will it last as long and it will be substantially higher cost of ownership over time.
I personally owned a Typhoon III before switching to a MaxCap and have log books showing the dat to support that statement. Right off the bat my DI life went from 150 gallons per DI cartridge to 830 gallons on the very first replacement and went up to over 1000 gallons per cartridge after that. Big cost savings! The AWI method of using two carbon blocks and making one of them act as a secondary prefilter is antiquated and old technology, most reputable vendors switched from that years ago as carbon block construction methods have progressed. Standard off the shelf DI resins will not perform the same nor last as long as those blended by hand based on thousands of hours of bench and beta testing in the field under actual conditions. Nor will most off the shelf dry untest RO membranes perform as well as a specially treated and tested RO membrane which is then shipped in a special solution so it arrives fresh.

There are many differences and that is why Spectrapure has been so successful for a small company located in the same small city for 25 years. Their small bit of advertising is not bunk, it is backed up with lots of research and development before a products makes it to market. the prices in that sale flyer represent a substantial savings, I paid like $389 for my first MaxCap system 7 or 8 years ago and now its $249? And the CSP-DI is a significant savings if you look at their normal website pricing.
