so i have a question not sure where i should put this. but i am going to build a canopy for my tank and was wondering do i need to keep my lights at the same hieght as they are now with the legs they come with to sit on the tank or can i raise them up a little bit so they have a little more room for me to get my hand in the tank.

that is the correct place of your thread and also idk what fixture u have but mine is adjustable and i would say yes you could move it up or down a few inches.

When I build my canopies I always look at the optimal height for the fixture I am building it around. This info is often available online, for example most people with MH lighting run them 8"-12" above the water's surface. So with that info I also attempt to build something that can be upgraded easily in the future should I change lighting. In my case, I made mine with the MHs at 10" so there would be play either up or down. The leg height is often the manufactures best median guess for where most people would like their lighting to sit, and often is not a great reflection of the optimal positioning for said lights.

All that being said, I wouldn't worry about going up or down a bit in most cases.

    Best of luck!
