for the water volume of a 29gallon...as much as i like to DIY....do regular water changes and you will do the best thing you can for your tank, my 2 cents

OK...so I picked up my materials to build my overflow. I went with 1 inch PVC pipe which I will paint with Krylon to match the color of the background of my tank. Hopefully this will not be a problem for the future inhabitants of the tank.

My LFS seems to have the line of aqueon quietflow pumps. Has anyone used these before or had any luck? Also, I'm looking for some sort of mesh to attach to the top of the 1 inch PVC overflow so that none of the tank inhabitants will crawl or attempt to swim down it. Any recommendations for what to use? I was thinking of using drywall mesh but am not sure if this would be a good idea.

OK, so I think I answered my own question regarding the 1 inch overflow pipe for anyone interested in knowing what I picked. I figured that cutting a fish net and spanning the top of the overflow pipe, attaching it with a rubber band would more than likely work. This way nothing too big can swim or crawl down it.
