I recently got a metal halide bulb from a friend that i was going to put into my propagation tank for now but it decided to quit on me, i was just wondering if this thing it toast or why it would not fire up anymore

I am using a 175 watt magnetic ballast for this bulb

    thanks

Well, it certainly could be dead, though MH bulbs usually last a lot longer than reefers keep them. Unfortunatly, the ballast could be to blame too. (Or even the wires!) I would try it on your friends ballast, or a the LFS just to be sure.

Birdlady this is what i was wondering as well, i was not sure but the system has worked for about a week now but that chart that you posted help alot thanks. but from the chart i believe that the bulb is a coralife or a coralvue in either case the ballast does match the bulb.

All the info i have on the bulb is 175 watt 6500K mogal base and my friend thought that the bulb was a coralvue, so as far as i can tell it matches but thanks again for the chart.

mmakay: i will try your advise and try it in my friends system to see if it fires up thanks

well i tested the bulb in my friends system and it did not work there either so i guess i'll be getting a new bulb from my lfs.

This bulb is for my propagation tank and i was wondering what spectrum i should put in there in there for the best growth of coral any ideas?

6500K will usually give the best coral growth per watt. Anything higher is for looks.
