I am looking to replace the bulbs on my current extreme ballast (39wx2 T5 HO) and I need a few opinions. As of right now, its is a FOWLR tank that will see the addition of corals sometime down the line when its very mature. My only need with the new lighting is to help support the new coraline growth, as I have a majority of base rock to cover. Im looking between UVl and Giesemann for brands, but I am open to other opinions. please let me know what spectrum would work best for my current situation. Thanks in advance everyone!

    P.S.
My lighting will see a much need upgrade when the time comes for corals ;DAnd I am a very big fan of the atinics!
Also, I am looking for a good moonlight setup that isn't very expensive if anyone has a recommendable unit.

I hope you forgive me for skirting your question while I give an opinion. It sounds as if you're mentally preparing yourself for "interim equipment." By this I mean you're going to buy something to tide you over, until you buy something else. Why spend more money than you have to?

If you're going to go with a reef setup eventually, there are many options from which to choose that will not break the bank, and will satisfy your short term goal for coralline growth; allow you to make just one purchase instead of two, and NOT have to upgrade when coral time draws near. Namely a primarily actinic T5 fixture.

Your 40G breeder is 17" high. You can purchase a T5 lighting setup, populate it with more actinic than daylight bulbs, and have the best of both worlds. It will foster coralline growth (providing you supply the proper chemistry), and you won't have to buy a new fixture when you upgrade to a coral tank.

    Something to consider. :)

Yes I am sorry sparky, I actually planned on adding another t5 ballast to the setup I currently have, so the new bulbs are here to stay until they then need to be replaced. I don't know how long it'll be before I add coral, so i didn't want to add a whole lot of daylight bulbs, just what was needed for the best coraline growth. I guess i figured everybody would be a mind reader. lol But thank you my friend, and Im sorry you had to write to that extent.
