So I got a 110G deep blue reef ready tank. The bulk heads that came with the tank have an end on them to hookup flexible plastic tubing as the supply to the sump and return to the tank... I went to Lowes & Home Depot and they do not sell bulk heads.

I found a small plumbing store that sells the same ABS bulkheads a BRS. These do not have the hook up for plastic tubing. The end that is out side the tank is just threaded.. What do I need to be able to hook up schedule 40 pvc pipe to these bulkheads?

I figured it would just be a threaded female adaptor but these bulk heads are about 1/8" bigger then schedule 40 pipe.

I know I can't be the first person to want to do this. Please help....

You always use the inside of the bulkheads never the outside which is only for the threaded jamb nut.

The inside can be a female tapered pipe thread like 1/2". 3/4" or 1" or they can be a slip or socket fit again in normal PVC sizes where you glue or friction fit the PVC in.

I have a Bulkhead Installation Tips thread here on 3Reef as well as many other reef forums which should help answer your questions if you do a quick search.

I prefer the thread x thread variety myself as you will find in the thread.

    Here it is:

Thanks for the help! I'm heading back to the hardware store to get something to fit inside not on the threads!

Any suggestions for a bulkhead that is slowly leaking. I've followed the steps on the link posted. And I'm getting a slow leak under the gasket on one side. Other then this area the rest of the bulk seems sealed

Is the gasket on the flange side and not the nut side? Did you take a few minutes and cut, file or sand all the excess plastic from the molding process smooth on both the flange face as well as the threads? Was the bulkhead a snug fit inside the drilled hole with little to no side to side movement or slop? Did you tighten it hand tight them maybe 1/4 additional turn to snug it up? You are not supporting any piping or weight which would cause unequal stresses on the bulhead and gasket are you?

Got it! All I did was loosen it up and push up and down letting the water drain down. Maybe there was some debris not allowing it to seal properly. Bulkheads freak me out. Starting to regret a drilled tank already :-/

You will love it very quickly, so much better than a HOB overflow!
