I recently bought a hermit crab from my LFS, Don't know what the name of it is. But it's shell is about as big as a golf ball and it have very hairy legs. I got 2 of them the same day and when i was finished acclimating them one was just sitting there while the other one took off. I watched it for a while and finally it started to move. I compared its looks to the other one and i noticed that both of its feelers and been nipped off. I also noticed a chunk missing out of his claw. I figure he was picked on by a fish. He is very shy and timid. Rarely comes out and hasn't moved from his spot.

My question, is there anything I can do to make him feel better? medicine, or will it take time to heel theses wounds? They don't look fresh, but I'm still worried. Thanks for your help in advance!

Cant speak for the growing back of feelers and such. But i got my 2 red legged hermits. and I swore he was going to die because he just sat around for the first 3 days. kinda hid in the back. But now a week later and he just runs all over the rocks. This weekend i got an emerald crab and 3 narrsisus snails and the crab acted the same. after aclimation he hid for a while then came out for a few hours, and now hes hiding again. the snails i dropped in 2 didnt move for the first 5 hours. just looked dead. I was really sad. then i woke up the next morning and wow they were not there. looked around one was merrily cleaning up the glass the other had climed on the back of one of the astrea snails and was cleaning him. You got to be impressed how strong these little critters are. So just give him some time.

    My 2 Cents

    hi,
1 am very new to this fish keeping saltwater but I have noticed over the past months many of the crabs, hermits shrimp seem very sensative to water changes they seem to like higher spec gravs and are shocked by water changes abit. I would add a gallon of r/o to replace the evap to the sump and they would sense the change and pull back into the shell for a day or two I would go from1.025 to 1.023 and they went into shock. So when you buy them maybe the store has different water condition and they are acclimating to the change.
Fish seem to like the lower spec grav and higher PH around 8.3-8.4.
I be learning as fast as I can, I did find I hadn't quite grasped the water CA++ versus Alk available thing and the problem of CA++ precip if you try to change to fast.
    Geeze its pretty complex...

as for your injured crab he should improve with Molts or Sheds unless its pretty sever as long as your water is healthy.and there's enough iodine.most of those skimmer seem to sap away all the good trace elements but alos most of the bad stuff too.
    its a trade off.
