And it is wearing off. Didn't get much sleep out of town. Come back and stay up 24 hours, get 6 of sleep, then go right into three night shifts. I was hurting. The wife and I talked. Seems to be a consensus it was because we were gone. For now on no treats or bones and no more assuming they are not food aggressive.

Sammy is up and a round. Java is freaked out, but we are doing the things we do in those cases. Things are getting back to normal. I was just in shock it came to this. They play and fight all day long. Both give as good as they get, but we know Java is much stronger. They will let the other know they are not in the mood from time to time, but it just takes a little grow. So it was quite shocking to come home and see my dog bleeding all over the place.

Java could have easily broke Sammy's arm from bighting, but it wasn't....so it was not THAT serious.

And the wife and I are going to get back to some of our training with Java. I really appreciate ALL the input. I knew I could get some feed back and put it in perspective with you guys here.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. We have a 65 pound "Beagle" who was a pound puppy. Years ago, I had the bigger dog (who was about 2 at the time) and my daschund, who was about 10 at the time. They had been together since the bigger dog was a puppy. I had one incident over a bone where the bigger one just turned on my daschund and took a big chunk out of his side. I was horrified! I was trying to separate them and they were really after each other. After the vet visit and sutures, they were back to normal. I had both dogs together after that for about 6 years without another incident. I was very careful with the bones, though.

I hope all continues to improve with Sammy and Java - they are family!

It's not uncommon for two adult females to suddenly not get along. One dog will decide to be dominate (and it isn't always the one you'd think!) and the battle begins...

Several years ago when my female Doberman was about 4 years old, we took in a rescue 18 month old female Dobe. They got along great for about a year, and then the younger dog began picking fights with my older Dobe. It progressively got worse until we had to finally find a home for the younger dog. Dobes are known for this behavior though - better to have a male and a female.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Feed separately, don't leave bones around, etc. Training is always good!

    Good luck!

Best of luck. I love my 2 dogs as family. Im sure you will work it out and you seem like a good enough dog owner to make it work.

So the neighbors got a new dog. Cute little Rottie 4 mo old..... That Java proceeded to rip to shreds.

Just got back from the hospital... puncture wounds, nothing seems terribly wrong. Java got through the fence. She is just too strong.

Really bummed out. I can't keep waiting for her to act out. I could turn my back yard into a fortress... but then I have to worry about her tearing into Sammy again some day.

I don't have many good options at this point. Really sad.

I'm really sorry to hear this. Just heart breaking. I don't even know what you're going through, but what I would say is that, you cannot stop living your life because of your fear of what your dog might do. You can't completely change your back yard, or be afraid to have your dog outside, be terrified a human might be next, etc. I'm sorry you have to make this tough decision.
