Yesterday I found my emerald crab dead. He was doing very well at least I thought so. He came along as a hitchhicker on my liverock. Don't really know what killed him, except that when I looked at him his stomach appeared like it had a been ripped open. I have hermit crabs in the tank....would they hurt him?

I have never heard of hermits attacking an emerald, although they can be mean little buggers, so I suppose it is possible. I always thought that they were more dangerous to snails. I have a Sally Lightfoot with hermits, and they seem to have no interest in eachother. I would say the culprit is elsewhere.

Well, the only reason I don't think he molted is because I removed him from the tank and it smelled pretty bad. I wouldn't think a molt would smell all that bad. But I will keep looking for that possibility. He was doing so well!

Actually, the molts can smell like death, litterally. I just removed a Sally shell, and it was terrible. Keep looking.

From what you're all saying it is possible he molted and it is alot more feasible then him just dieing. I will have to keep an eye out, can't wait to find the little critter if he is still alive. I enjoyed watching him alot.

I thought a hitch hikers mathix crab died when I saw the remains. But then I saw it a couple of days later bigger and shinier.
