The photos show my 75 gallon bowfront. I wanted to replace my 4 VHO retrofit w/icecap ballast... with this unit found on ebay.
It would sit above my tank inside the open canopy... measurements fit great...
The photos of my canopy show how both top lids will be off... and how the back is open about 8 inches to the wall.
The only covered area is the front and sides... canopy material is plastic and stainless steel.

Can I use this T5HO / MH unit without burning down my house... it comes with built in fans as well...

I wouldn't advise it but my experience with lighting is armature level... So I'm not 100% sure.

By the way, If that is your tank in your avatar, I LOVE your stand and canopy. Where did you get it. I REALLY NEED one now since I've seen urs. Everything in my house is stainless steel. It'd be awesome to have a STS stand and canopy

Ask him whats the name brand? 9 out of 10, when they dont say it, its probably an Odyssea. Use 3reef's search eng. and look up Odyssea light fixture and read up on it. Luna

You can use this unit without issue and the upgrade will be phenomenal over the VHO’s. You have more than enough vent since your top is very open – the MH will toss a lot more heat than you are use to so monitor your tanks temp.

Very Cool... I'm going to do the search on the product now... I've also requested from the ebay seller the name of the company who makes it. He gives a 5 year warranty and satisfaction guarantee... I've also asked for the details of that. My current lighting with VHO is very purple tinted... never really felt like real-life lighting...
If I do go with this unit... how long do I leave the MH on for? The super actinic T5HO are independent... (blue) and can be turned on first... before the MH... I currently only have FOWLR but want to get zoo's and mushrooms to start... list of fish are in my signature. Thanks!

Anyone else with any thoughts on this product... or potential fire hazard for setup?
Also, unit comes with 2-15k Metal Halide bulbs... is this a good one to get or the 10k? it'll run with the super actinic blue (t5 ho) bulbs x 2...

Any thoughts on how long each light should run... ?

Anything has a "potential" to catch fire, all depends on the quality of the materials used. I dont see anything wrong with those lights. Luna

Ill go ahead and be the pessimistic one. Ive never heard anything good about ebay units, ever. Akthough, I have no personal experience with ebay lighting, so I dont know how far my opinion goes. And for 450 bucks, you could find a very nice unit elsewhere. Try classifieds or even reefgeek.

*Edit* In all honesty, looks like I havent been able to find a 48" MH fixture for anywhere near 450, but I still dont trust ebay lights.

This is a nice looking setup. Let us know what you think about them if you get them.
I will hopefully soon be in the market for a 48" fixture as well.. and this seems to be a good deal.
