Hi all, I would like to ask all who know. How bad is it to burn trash on your garden before you plant and til? I know a person who did this and he won't believe me that it's not good. It's all bad trash, nothing organic. Plastic, aluminum, baby dippers, rubber, plastic bags...etc. Since I'm never taken seriously, is there anyone out there that can prove this is a bad thing to do to your vegetable garden?

Anything that was burnt would break down and leach into the soil, then the vegtables could take in the contaminants. Burning of the organic matter in the garden at the end of the season does help return nutrients to the ground, and is a common practice on large farm fields in many areas. But I wouldn't think cans and diapers would have much beneficial to contribute. It's the same reason we don't burn our dumps anymore, releases too much harmful substances into the air and ground.

Why do you want to prove him wrong? Is he selling the veggies? if not, you did the neighborly thing and tried to help, now let it go. If he is, call the proper authority. I'm guessing department of ag but I don't work on the growing side of the food industry.

Well, it's not that I want to prove him wrong, it's that if I don't show him that other people say it's wrong he won't trust. He's family and I love him, but he's is one who doesn't really believe anything like this can hurt. My wife and I no longer eat out of the garden and his wife us very upset about it. It's just that it can take years for cancers and whatnot to show up. I don't want to see my young family members get sick.

Burning the trash is not a bad thing it, you can burn rather keeping it and help to create diseases burning can help you to get rid of poisoned insects.

Totally disagree with the above post. Are you the neighbor by any chance? Burning any toxins is always dangerous! Especially for our environment!
To the OP. Don't eat their veggies!!! Your smart to fear cancer causing agents.
