Okay a question about butterflies. I have this idea for a 90gal build, still a pipe dream at the moment but still gonna plan this baby out. Anyways i'm wanting a reef lps and softy majority, but i love the butterfly fish i find them very beautiful, and i found some that say with caution but wanting inputs first, i'm thinking Spotfin, Tear drop, and Lemon/Millet. Anyone know anything about these guys? Or should i rethink them completely?

the only butterfly that I know of that is reef safe are Pyramid butterflies. they are plankton feeders. I have one and it is a perfect model citizen. some have had success with the Copper band, but they are difficult feeders. others are just plain old coral munchers...

The Margined Butterflyfish (the copperbanded's cousin) is hardier but also comes with a higher price tag.

If you wanted butterflys really bad i would get live rock and just not coral and if you really wanted coral you could just trade in the butterflys.

Would rather have the coral. I'm gonna look at the pyrimid butterfly though.

Forcipiger flavissimus (Yellow Long Nosed) is better behaved than most as well. Each fish is different though and with each you are taking a gamble. It's similar to Angelfish. Most of the Chaetodon group is a flat out no-go with coral.
