How do you get rid of button polyps?

I have a group that has attached and taking over my brain favites. I have actually kalked some of them but they keep comming up and I'm afraid of killing the brain.

try to frag them. Take them out, cut the mat and glue them to another rock or frag plug. Or just cut them off. Is the brain/favia dead or does it have an exposed skeleton, or are they making the brain retract?

You need to study on how to frag them before you just go willy nilly in there. Zoa's/paly's/buttons contain palytoxin, one of the most lethal poisons in the natural world. Gloves and eye protection needs to be worn, and I highly recommend doing them in a seperate container that you can take to keep away from pets, children, etc. And wash everything VERY well when done.

They aren't on a mat, more individual like. Some of the favites original skelton is showing, that's where the polyps are attached. It was our first coral 10 years ago. It has been through 3 major crashes and still alive. It's now about a 3" circle. It fell towards back of tank a long time ago and polyps began attaching to it. When we moved to bigger tank I was able to retreive it and saw that polyps were moving all around it. I was trying to lean the clean side of the skeleton against a rock hoping the brain would grow to it, but afraid the polyps will be faster.

I was originally hoping that the brain would overtake them, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I've reached in a pinched off a few before I thought about what I was doing when I was mad it was killing off my brain.::) The are the (Protopalythoa sp.). I call them weeds.

I am having the same issues. A few turned into hundreds in a matter on a few months. They have overrun my zoas and nothing short of actually taking the rock out and cutting them off has worked. I am a little pissed as the zoas were doing so well and now I am fighting an overgrowth of something that I really didn't want to start with.

Take the brain out in a seperate container of tank water. WEAR EYE GOGGLES AND GLOVES. Cut the polyps as close to the base as possible with a sharp exacto or scalpel. Wash the container and tools VERY WELL when done.
