I am a member of a fourm with mostly seattle reefers. I recently connected with a guy looking to sell 40 pounds of live rock which I offered to buy for 85 bucks. What should I be worried about when buying from this guy? He has been a member of the fourm for 5 years and has over 1900 posts. He seems pretty reputable. I am not however gonna put the rock right into my tank. What steps should I take before I put the rock in?

Your going to want to look out for hitchhikers. The rock could come with aptasia, coral eating nudis and tons of other bad things. If its an established reef tank its really safer to get dry rock.

I would bleach the rock then cycle it again, then add it to your tank. That way you know exactly what's going into your tank.

It is an established reef. I will probably bleach it before I add. How much bleach should I need? For now I will keep it in an rubbermaid bin till that happens.

I asked him a few more questions. From what I can tell the live rock doesn't have anything mine doesn't have. But to be safe I will bleach it and then clean it and put it in the tank this weekend.

+1 to bleach. Any second hand rock needs to be fully nuked before placing in your tank.
