    Nope.
It is used by them but not produced by them.
Closest you can get is in animal byproducts... Skeletons ,carapaces, shells etc.
There is just A bigger economy of it in the sea than could ever be invitro.

My wife also knows when I've been thinking b/c she says theres a "burnt" smell in the house..............lol

The animals in the ocean dont produce Cal just use it as Midway mentioned.

Not unless you ground them up so fine that they dissolved as soon as they hit the water. I would think it would be cheaper to buy calcium supplements :)

When I first setup my tank, I put in several largeish (softball sized) shells that were also kind of thin.

Within several months (around a year maybe) there was very little of these shells left.

    Lessons.

    • Don't use shells as structural support... it'll collapse ;)
    • that shell is dissolving and most likely adding Ca back to the tank.

Something I do (and I am guessing it's useful) is leave some shells in a back corner to dissolve... I'm taking a wild guess they are adding trace minerals back for me...

I still have to dose Ca every day though...

Aragonite sand will also dissolve (slowly) over time but I'm under the impression that the original poster is looking to find something to replace calcium supplements?
