calcium number

    is it fine for your calcium to be over 520? thanks:)

    If you have stoney corals, it's a little bit high. (It causes them to work harder to remove the excess Calcium). However, they'll use it and then the number will be more in line with NSW. In other words, you wouldn't want to keep it at 520 on a regular basis but I wouldn't go doing large waterchanges to bring it down.

    o.k. can't inverts and more hard coral suck the calcium out of the water?

    Yes. They will use it, coralline algae will use it, clams will use it, snails will use it. Then the numbers will drop to Natural Seawater levels. However, Calcium, alkalinity, Magnesium, and Strontium (all components of Calcium Carbonate) are not good for them...they have to work to remove it from their systems. Evolution over millions of years has provided a way for them to find a convenient use for the toxins they are removing from their body....they use it as a protective home. I don't think it's a good idea to force them to have to deal with excess levels long-term.
