    I have worked up a simple excel spreadsheet that calculates the amount of time and water required to attain a certain % water change when doing a simultaneous input/output water change.

    This calculation assumes that the input/output flow rates are identical. It also assumes instantaneous mixing of old and new water. In the real-world, mixing is not instantaneous but becomes nearly so the longer the water change is performed and the more water turnover that exists in the system.

    As the calculation shows, this method of water changing is not as inefficient as some might suggest as long as smaller water changes are being done.
