If your fishing and cut it off, which I do when I catch a ray, not a big deal. But that's not what he means.. Resources as in money, time, effort.. There are definitely bigger problems californian's tax dollars could be aiding, other than de-barbing rays. Thats for sure.

A ray does not need a barb to live. Unless it is being squashed by an evil human.

Even if it grows back (learned something new!) it still deprives them of their natural defense for ... how long?

If you were a cop, and someone came up to your one day and took your gun away, and said "don't worry, you'll get a .22 single shot in 2 weeks, and your 9mm back in 2 months" then left him on his own....

Sure, chances are pretty good you'd be fine in the long run... but who knows?

Is it fair to do the same to the rays?

You can't compare human life to sting ray life.

Even if you could where does it end? You don't have to worry about getting jabbed in the face when you bite into a hamburger. What makes you more deserving of a barb-free lunch than a shark?

The article says its only for the summer when the beaches get crowded, I get mad and angry at people who poke and prod unnessessarily at animals but never at the expense of another human being. Comepare the cost of being hospitalized and the traumal to the cost of debarbing rays for the summer. Ill be damned if my medical insurance deem me as total lost if there's a check mark for "do you go to the beach often?" And I check yes. The lifegaurds are already gonna be there and being paid to be there, the scientist get research and being paid anyways, not much resources being put out for debarbing. It'll promote more people to go out to the beaches, buy food spend money to further stimulate the economy.
