Lunatic and pack are giving a viable alternative. If budget permits it is a good solution and you should be able to minimize the vibration noise seeing how it is in another room. If using the pump now, the suggestion about a T and valves is suitable if it is enough flow for the chiller and still keeps up with the over flow.

The trick with the mag12 is that you have to run it externally which is more potential for leaks and could require a lot of extra work maybe even drilling the sump depending how you want to do it. However this would probably be the best heat-savings.

It might be easier to bump up your return plumbing size and keep the mag 9.5.

You might even be able to run the 9.5 externally and T it off with larger plumbing for the most heat savings. You may be surprised how much more flow you get from going from 3/4" to 1" plumbing for example. I ran a fake scenario through a head loss calculator and it went from 613gph to 731gph just by using 1" plumbing as opposed to 3/4".

Anyways, just offering options because it really depends a lot on specifics. :)

Just a dumb question.....Why are you worried about the heat 1 pump is generating if you have a chiller????? I also have a rio 2100 feeding my chiller and it only runs twice a day for about 1/2 hr set at 78. Just curious??

    big difference

But look at your beast chiller... mine's a 1/6 ... half the size of urs... I would love to have your size chiller... personally ... I don't think 1/6 is very good for a 72 gallon although it's rated for up to 90 gallons...

Here's the deal, the chiller turns on virtually every 15 minutes... and stays on for about 2 minutes... that means it runs about 8 to 10 minutes an hour... that 240 minutes a day... why? I'm trying to go through my options to keep tank cool without doing evaporative cooling... I do have a 10 gallon drip system... but I hate filling it up often with that old method!!!!!

What brand is your chiller? Aqua Euro by chance?? My friend has one and had the same problem with the cycling. He fixed the problem in the programming. If that is the case--I will ask him how he did it. Also is it possible there is too much flow through chiller?? Maybe not giving the water enough contact time??

Another option is to add a low speed fan blowing across the water in your sump or across the top of the display tank.

He said he did not want to go with evaporative cooling--probably due to evaporation.

Right on robman... it's like we're one in the same tank!
That evaporation cooling works great... but sucks when you have to refill a 10 gallon reserve tub every 3, 4 days.

As for the brand... it's a coralife 1/6...
there's not much to the control unit... I just think I needed a bigger unit... One of those stupid purchases where spending a little more would have been better. Chalk that one up to tank lesson learned in the first year.
