I would love to post pics on here of some of my stuff, but only have my iphone for a camera atm. Was wondering what other's used to post and if anyone had recommendations for a decent digital that would do the trick without breaking my piggy bank...which would reduce my coral aquisition habit

iPhone has a pretty decent camera. The iPhone camera has limited settings so you are usually subject to very blue colors.
I recently picked up a cannon rebel t1i. Got it for 500. 15.1 megapixel. If your looking for a camera that can do closeups of corals ie polyp extension an such you will want a digital slr. And those cameras will break the bank. The one I got which I mentioned is on the cheap side for dslr. But with dslr put your money into your lenses. Not the body. Just my 2 cents.

If you want a decent digital camera for this kind of stuff odds are you are going to want some close up shots as well, I think you'll have a hard time for $200, I would aim around $400 starting point. Nikon or Canon

well being a photograpy dum dum, i am a lil overwhelmed at all the features etc, essentially what i would like is something to take pictures including closeups of my corals...not be all blued out when i shoot the tank as a whole as well as being good for general usage

is there a good reference to read up on the differences in features and does anyone have recommendations with reasons why?

I use my wife's Nikon D5000 with filters on the Auto setting. There is a new model out, the Nikon D5100. You can probably get a good deal on the D5000's right now seeing as they are outdated, and Black Friday sales are coming around as well. You can usually use an editing program to get rid of the blue tint.

If you're looking for close-ups (macro), unfortunately it's hard to get great shots with a P&S, you'll need a DSLR. You would have to bump up your price range, I would suggest you look into a used body (either Nikon or Canon I would recommend). I'm a nikon guy so I would suggest a D40 or D50 body if you're trying to stay on the cheaper side. For great close-ups you'll need a macro lens, I would recommend something in the 90-100mm macro range but they are a bit pricy...but a D40 with a kit lens would get you decent pics and you could probably pick one up on craigslist for ~$250-350. You could get a macro lens later.
