I'm dreaming of a new camera - one of the digital SLR's. I've always loved photography and have a wonderful Yashika with a 200mm zoom that's probably 25 years old and still works great - but I hate dealing with film and it weighs a ton. I have a Canon PowerShot point-and-shoot digital that takes nice pictures (I took my clown avatar pic with that camera), but I'm looking to upgrade. I'm looking at the Canon Rebel. Anybody have any suggestions?

And Jwin, if you happen to see this, DON'T TELL DAD or I'll take away your allowance! ;D

Canon 40D is a great camera for the money, and is a pro-level camera. Nothing like Camilisky's 5D I saw in his tank thread yesterday... I have the 30D, which is pretty much the same camera with a smaller LCD, the 40D has 2 more mega pixels ...

I just bought a Rebel xs on Sunday, it's easy to use right out of the box(so far) and the picture quality is day and night comapred to my point and shoot. I highly recommend the rebel xs, and it's right in your price range.

Yup! It's a good suggestion! My 0.02$! Buy cheaper body, however invest in good lens! You won't regret! Even the best DSLR camera is limited by the quality of optics -> lens! I know many people who fallen into trap of buying fancy camera body and crappy lenses... Believe me, you don't want to be one of them! :)

    Hey!
I'm using 24-70 2.8 USM L and 100-400 IS USM L ! Both are great! My next step is CANON 180 USM L macro! My camera is Canon 5D MkII

I totally agree, the body is the Cheap part, the lens is where you will spend most of your money. Good lenses can start at $500 easy.
