I know that you had mentioned that your LFS is helpful, the fact that they use quality test kits is definitely a plus. I think getting your own RO unit is a great first step. However, if you do this Id get a dual inline TDS meter. For 25 bucks it gives you the most accurate reading of the life of your filters. Do you have a GFO reactor online? Water changes with clean water will be a big help.

I'll definitely set up the RO/DI unit that I have. Is there a specific TDS meter That you would recommend? I may set up a GFO reactor as well. Are there any good HOB models?

Check out the radar section of the blog, there is a new mini reactor from innovative marine that would probably work for ya! They're going to be pretty affordable too

Id go for this guy. I have mine placed after my RO and then after my second DI stage. As for HOB reactors I cant say that I know of any that I can vouch for. I hate the look of HOB stuff personally so I dont use HOB filters ect. You could just do GFO in a media bag in your HOB filter, however a reactor would probably be your most efficient way of using GFO.

Get a pressure gauge as well! Most systems offer it as an option.

    Thanks! I'll check that out.

I'll see if I can order that tonight. I don't like the look of HOB stuff either, but I don't have any other choice :-/

I'll talk to my parents about that as well ;)

Now that I think about it, I may be able to make a DIY GFO reactor :)

New idea! I have a 52 gallon aquarium with a HOB overflow and stand. What if I were to take the 52 gallon off of the stand and replace it with the 29? That way I could make my own sump and have space for things like a fuge, an ATO, and reactors :D Does that sound like a good idea?

Here are a few pics of the 52 gallon:

I can change out the wet/dry for a sump

Or just switch to the 52 all together. Id switch to the bigger tank.

But then I'd need new lighting and filtration. The 52 is really scratched up as well.
