Dont rush this decision. You should be buying a camera to suit you for the next couple years. Spend the money and you will be happy. The S100 isnt only better because of the sensor, but the lens. The lens quality is really what makes the difference. I dont have any experience with these cameras and although they have high megapixels that doesnt necessarily mean much. Also, if you are looking to get quality images you will NEED to look into photography basics. There is not a preset on your camera for aquarium photography, and even if there is I doubt the color balance is correct. Good luck with your decison, but I would not rush it. Go for quality, you wont regret it.

So is there a good camera for around that price? I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm rushing things. It's just that my parents are about to go shopping for Christmas.

    Well, of these two..

    Canon Powershot SX260 IS

    12.1 megapixels
    - 20x optical zoom
    - 3200 ISO - anything above 800 is likely to show grain/noise in the resulting image
    - HD video - should take decently high quality video. This is one thign I wish my nikon p90 had.
    - 25mm lens
    - 3" LCD screen
    - High speed burst
    - Face ID and red eye correction

    Canon Powershot SX160 IS

    - 16 megapixels - higher megapixels = better image quality? Not necesarily, but it certainly helps on a point-and-shoot.
    - 16x optical zoom
    - 800 ISO - Good quality images, but not grainy.
    - HD video - reef vids again
    - 28mm lens
    - 3" LCD screen
    - Also has subject detection (basically the same thing as face ID) and red eye correction - good for family portraits, doesn't do anything for you and your tank.

I would go with the SX160 IS.

One thing to think about is you may be able to get a good deal now or shortly after christmas as they get ready for the next year's model cameras to come out. But then it's also going to be the next year's model...as in, it could be better than what you're looking at now for a similar price tag.

Well I could get the SX160 IS for $150 at Best Buy. Would that be considered a good deal?

Dude, I'd go with the Canon S100 because I personally own one. Most of the pics I took are from S100. You have full control over your images, honestly best camera iv owned.

    Few shots from S100 (unedited!)

I do like that camera. It's just a bit too expensive. My parents think that even the XS160 IS is expensive for a camera, but I might be able to convince them for it at $150.

I would honestly just save and hold off on buying a camera then.

What exactly makes the Canon such a bad camera?
