Yes a good canister if properly cleaned will do a better job than HOB. Plus you'll get better flow with a canister.

I only have experience with the fluval series. I'm sure some other canister users can give you some good suggestions on other ones that are good. As for the fluval I am very happy with it.

Personally, I think it depends on who decides to answer you. Most people will suggest that you bypass a canister filter and get a sump. I use a canister filter on a 30 gal tank and personally like it a lot based on my experience. You could go with a hang on filter/protein skimmer like a Reef Octopus BH-100F. I would think this or a canister would be a better option than a regular HOB filter for a tank your size.

Yeah I like it, and yes it comes with everything you need to set up. Has a very good flow rate too, which you can adjust to lower it for a smaller tank. It is very easy to clean, the only problem is sometimes the suction makes it a little tough to get the top off, but that is a minor prob.

Yes I do like the Fluval 305. I've never hand any other canister filter before so I don't have anything to compare it against, but I'm very happy with. It does come with all the hoses and connections that you need. It even comes with some sponge bricks, carbon and ceramic rings to get you started.

+ 1 on Fluval models for me, great units had a few different ones, depending on tank size
never had a problem (that wasn't my fault) easy to set up and clean out

the problem that was my fault

    1 turn of power
    2 turn off taps
3 undo catches and lift top off

if you go from step 1 to step 3 - you get shoes, socks and a carpet full of water

I currently use two Eheim 2213 canister filters. They came with the tank when I got it off of craigslist. I probably wouldnt have bought them if they hadnt come with it, but I do like them. They work good. Good place to put so carbon, I also filled one of them with Live rock rubble.
