I am one such person... sorta. I don't have a sump or fuge either.

Replace the HOB filter with more Live Rock (Base Rock, really) in your tank.

If you're not already running a quality skimmer, that's the best gift you can give your tank after good lighting - IME so far. HOB Filter is almost = no filter anyway, IMO.

The mentioned skimmer above is the one I run and I really like it.

Thanks for the help, added a Fluval 405 and so far so good, but i need to trim down the intake rod that goes in the tank - think thats ok? last question is that prior to this i had ordered a phosphate reactor from 2 little fishes. should i use that or just add the phosban type media to my fluval? is one better than the other? thanks

I've been told that the phosphate reactor will be much more efficient than the canister as water moves through the media better. However when I ask other canister owners they commented that a product like phosban is still effective in a media bag inside a canister. You just have to be careful because it can get messy. I plan on trying a purigen/rowaphos combo inside my canister when my Chemi-Pure Elite is exhausted.

Id 100% agree with that tronb24 - I have used 3 different types/ brands of Phosphate remover over the years and always in cannister filters, I would agree that they are more efficient in a reactor as they are not packed tight and thus dont get clogged as easily

My experience was that 2 or more treatments where required to compensate for this lack of efficiency but in all 3 cases the PO4 was lowered as a result of remover in a mesh bag, in a cannister filter
