Can a dried coral be seeded by a live one?

    I was at a store that had some huge dead corals. I was wondering it you put a live sps on it if the polyps will spread to it and revive the dead coral again.

    Live SPS will grow and spread given the right conditions but the dead coral isn't really any more conducive to this than any other piece of rock or glass or plastic, other than the fact that the dead coral might add a bit of calcium to your water. Then again, it might be a spot for your calcium to precipitate out.

    Correct.

    Live rock as we know it is actually dead corals that have been recolonized by other live forms. So a dead coral is really nothing more than an neat looking piece of base rock.
