    hi

i have a 55G tank next to my bed and every now and then i hear odd noises coming from it i know that its not the equipment as when i look at the tank ether something is chasing something or my regal tang and yellow tang are arguing again (Dory my regal tang keeps going into where my yellow tang called yellow lives and yellow will chase him/her out but that's all that happens I've never actually seen them nipping or actually hurting each other) and also especially at night i hear like a knocking noise that I've come to decide its coming from Dory

is this natural can fish make noises like a cat meows or a dog barks?

i know some fish can grunt or make a rough sound that may be similar to a barking, i don't think fish can meow. as for your fish, i haven't heard of tangs making any noise but that's a purely my limited knowledge as i don't keep tangs. do you have an overflow? some overflow setups can make a kissing or squeak that could be discerned as a type of meow... other than that i'm kinda clueless.

my fish dont meow lol i was simply comparing what i mean by noises as i couldnt really say can fish talk lol but in answer to your question no i dont have an overflow yet as i dont have a sump nearly brought today a second hand stand that was 5ft long and had a 60G sump with bio-balls return pump and all the pipe work for £100 and as my tank it self on its own was nearly £500 i think its a dam good bargain appart from its a lot larger than the tank but it will give me space around it to put stuff like food etc

I've had triggers in the past that when fed, I could hear sounds like teeth snapping shut. It was fairly common. Outside of that, I've not personally heard other sounds, but I'm always open to new information. If there's one thing I've learned in this hobby, it's that there is new interesting stuff to find out every day.

It's your clowns or your damsels. They definitely make noises if they are excited, territorial, etc. The most common noises are the teeth clicking or when they make that popping sound.

I hear knocking in my tank at night. I woke up and turned the lights on to see a large crab walking against the powerhead flow and kept tapping on the glass everytime it pushed him back.

    noises....

Just happened to see this post as I was wandering the web, and wanted to let you know....

I don't know if your signature is still accurate... but if you still have the Emperor Angel, then that's your culprit. Emperors are known for their noises whenever they reach a certain size.... That "knocking" sound you hear is the angel grunting. Perhaps at other fish, or you whenever you walk by the tank and he only sees your shadow.

Ours grunts angrily and a LOT whenever the lights turn out... and she'll growl at the other fish if they try to eat her food. She grunts at us when we put our hand in the tank, and get too close to her "cave"... and She'll grunt at us when we walk through the house and all of the lights are out, if we surprise her. She also makes a strange clicking sound after the lights have been off for about an hour (at least, I'm assuming it's her. No Mantis Shrimp have materialized in the 2 years we've been hearing it! haha) We've had our angel for 2 1/2 years now, and we've grown her from the size of a silver dollar (she's now a very nice 7 inches long and has most of her adult coloration).

For a VERY long time we thought it was the wooden stand under the tank breaking, but then, while I was researching what adult wild angels eat, I happened upon an article that commented on the different grunts and growls angels can make. Pretty cool!

    Hope this helps!
