i just got a new supreme magdrive 7 as a main pump for my 75gal tank. it turns out that the flow is too much for the outflow so im using a ball valve to restrict the flow. is doing this shortening the life of my pump, will it be ok or will i burn out the magnet?

Thats fine, that will not burn out the pump. As long as you keep the pump with water going throu it, you'll be fine. Luna

If you restrict the incoming water you will burn the pump up. If you restrict the outgoing water you will have no problems and most pumps use less wattage when dialed back.

I just burnt out a mag9.5 that did not have a lot of use on it. The impeller spins as it should by hand (both ones will actually) but will not restart once plugged in. The pump will actually throw the GFCI. It "stalled" a couple times but would re start after i used a tooth pick to turn the impeller.

The last time it would not re start, and no amount of cleaning would fix it. It was not even barely dirty.

For the watts they need, they are very poor compared to other pumps.

I have switched to a Quiet One 3000 since they use a lot less watts, and IMHO, work better. Now I hear that large QO pumps (like the 9000) are not so quiet.

No experience here with actually burning them out. I researched this a bit and came up with the following. If you dial it back on the order of 90%, then there are going to be issues. But mild to moderate dial backs are fine. I have had my Mag 9.5 dialed back to 70% for months now, with no issues
