I'm new to the hobby and just started doing some research on lighting. Would it be possible to convert a single fluorescent light fixture to LED? I was thinking about gutting the fixture and putting in a heat sink with LED's in its place.

The fixture measures: 28x3x3 (not counting the angled portion)

This is for a 29 gallon standard aquarium. I'm not sure what the livestock will be at the moment.

decide on the livestock you want to keep and base your lighting on that.
to answer your question, yes it is possible to gut the fxiture and put in LED, plenty of poeple did what you are about to do.

I believe for a fish only tank the lighting really doesn't matter I think they still should be absorbing vitamin D through their lighting though -- also if your fixture is aluminum and should work as a heat-sink then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to mount some LED's to it
