    sounds abit odd ,
I dont think that they would be stinging one another!!
But if you want to split the rock it should be ok Id think?

How long have they been in the tank, and where in respect to height and flow?

well the flow hits the higher one more than the little one but i figure they dont open up big due to their tentacles right nex to each other and the lower one shrivels up when the higher ones tentacles hit it.

could they just be closing because they are touching each other, if anything even lightly bumps my zoas they close, but then again they touch each other all day with no closing, if you want to split it, Id put it in a bucket weith enough tank water to cover them and split the rock with a sharp chisel and a hammer, probablly break with one sharp blow...

torch corals dont sting each other

cutting corals is called fragging, use a dremel or rotozip to cut the hard stem ( which is basically like bone structure ). then use gel crazy glue to attach to a piece of rubble. and now you have two.

sps fragging is the same way but with a pair of cutting pliers
