I just bought a 40 breeder for a freshwater tank (Petco $1/gal sale started again yesterday btw, at least in my area). I planned on using 2 30 gallon filters for it but the problem is they sit up higher than they are supposed to by 1/2 an inch due to the thickness of the trim (which will give a loud waterfall sound). The main part isn't a problem, but the part that sticks out sideways is. Would the glass still have enough bracing if I cut the thin sideways part off in 2 parts that are 7.5 inches each (tank is 36" long)? It doesn't seem like it is that important toward bracing it, but I'd think it's there for a reason. Thanks.

I have seen a thread on Aquatic Plants Central where some one did it to a 10gal, but I don't really know. keep us posted if you do

I have heard you can remove the trim if there is no brace.

Use a dremmel with a sanding drum to 'sand" down the section you want.. If you can stay off the corners 1.5" would be best. (ie don't sand down right at the corner.)

That lip is mainly to set a glass top on and doesn't offer a lot of support to the tank itself, but does offer a lil in the corners..

You could cut the lip without any worry I think.

I've notched it in the past without any ill effect for the same reason, but that was just the lip and did not touch the vertical face of the trim up against the glass just the lower part of the "L" shape

I didn't think of lid. I believe that should be the purpose of it. That makes me feel a little better cutting part of it.

I'll definitely post again if it ever breaks over time seemingly to that, but it probably is nothing to worry about, I guess.

By dremmeling it you are probably a lot safer, just in case it is more important that your thinking

youll be fine if you just trim the part that stick out sideways into the tank. U could run that tank rimless if you install a glass baffle in the center. Food for thought...........
