Long story short, I'm looking at Nanos for a seahorse tank.

Seems like I'm headed for the JBJ 28G Nano, but I'm not sure If I want to do the 105 Watt Quad Compacts or the LED.

I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just soft corals and lower priced stuff. I have a tank where I can/need to pull out some stuff like Frogspawn and Kenya Tree.

Would leathers/frogspawn/kenya/xenia/shrooms all work under the compact fluorescents?

Also, would there be any difference in heat between LED and fluorescent?
I know I need to keep the seahorse tank lower than an average tank...

    Thanks

yea thats more than enough....that should be enough for even some easy sps like monti caps

there would be a huge difference between fluorecent and LED.
1)fluorecents need to be changed every so often and can easily add up in time where LEDs will last you 7-10 years
    2)LEDs have higher par readings
3)you can change up bulbs and colors with LEDs to make a wider spectrum where fluorescents you are limited with
4)LEDs will give you a better electric bill
    5)LEDs are much cooler(temperature wise)
6)LEDs give you a shimmering affect as MH's would
7)you could always add more LEDs to your set where as you wouldnt really be willing to add more fluorecent bulbs in most cases

the only downside to LEDs i would say is the fact that they are more up front, check out rapidLED they have a kit specifically for BCs

    Thanks.
Yeah, like I said, it's for Seahorses. So, I'd probably need a Chiller regardless of the heat issue.

Softies and easy SPS sound good though...

The problem was, at one store, when the LED and Comp/Flos were in 2 tanks right next to each other I thought the LED looked SO much better.

And then at another store, they only had the Comp/Flos and I thought it looked good. I guess I just can't put it next to LEDs... 8)

I found the JBJ 28 online with the stand for $360 and free shipping. Seems like a pretty good deal for a tank in that gallon range

So, I was able to find the same JBJ 28 Nano, but with the Intermediate LED lighting for only $100 more than the JBJ with the Comp-Fluorescents.

Worth the extra $90 I assume?

    To reiterate:

Considering the cost of CF bulbs and the fact that they need replaced every 6 months, yes the LEDs will pay for themselves many, many times before they burn out. Then add the fact that LEDs use less power... you get the point. :)

    Welcome to the obsession!!
It's good that you are going to use a chiller for the tank as they are known to be "warm" and possibly still will be with the LED due to being covered.
You may want to reconsider your choices of corals.
First, while no stinging corals should be a given, many placing sps corals in the tank find that it is problematic because seahorse tanks are so dirty and sps do best in low nutrient tanks.
Seahorse tanks are "dirty" because they are selective feeders eating only the pieces they consider choice to them, and, when they snick the food, they masticate the food and pass a nutrient laden residue out their gills and into the water.
Have you checked the seahorse.org site for sps that may work? The tankmates guide lists six types but one is a threat level 2 and the others, 3.
