Hi, i have a 30 gallon reef tank thats been up for about 6 months now. all of my parameters are stable. i have a 4 bulb fixture from fishneedit and its taking care of my acroporas well, so i think i have a good amount of lighting. i have a sump with about 1500+ gph of flow.

Am i able to get an anemone. I know a decent amount about them, id like to know if im able to keep one, and if so, what is an easy type that will do well in a 30 gallon. im not willing to nuke my tank over this, so something fairly easy would be nice. ive looked into maxxi carpets and like them, but im definitely up for absolutely anything. i dont have a clownfish at the moment, and i dont want it because I want it to host a clown. my tank specs are easily seen through both links in my signature.

    Thanks in advance:)

Keeping anemone's in a reef tank is always a risky proposition. Keep in mind that they do sometimes like to wander around the tank and can pose a significant threat to any corals they come into contact with. Also you will have to use some kind of protection from them becoming injured by PH's or overflows. I would think Maxi's my be your best option in a small tank as these are least likely to roam.;)

    Thanks everyone :)

Would a hydor Koralia have enough protection or should I cover that in mesh or something? After looking at bta's and comparing them to maxi carpets, I think i would rather have a bta. Will this be too risky? I don't think I'll be able to find a maxi anywhere near me but Im sure I can find a bta.

i called up my fish stores, and they all have bubble tips, no carpets. the problem is that they are all 80$ except for the green bta, which is 60$. reef2reef sells them for 20$, should i buy from them since it will be cheaper, or buy from my lfs which sells at 60$? The more i look at all these anemones, the more im scared of putting one in my tank. it might not even be worth it.

I tried a bubble tip, didn't work out :( I won't try one again. Been there, done that!

If you want to try - go for it. But be prepared, know the risks and know when to get the guy out of your tank if it's dying. If it dies, the smaller your tank, the easier it is to foul up the water.

I had my nem in my 90 gallon, and its 95% death (I removed it before it was all the way gone) caused a cyano bloom.

If you can avoid shipping, I would definitely go that route. They are fairly sensitive buggers.

That's a tough one. I'm sure you could keep one successfully, but I'd be worried about it taking a walk. Personally if you want one, get a tube nem. They don't move(as far as I know) and are REALLY cool!

IMOPE, just because nems can sting at random doesn't necessarily mean that they will. I watched as my RBTA wandered into a colt coral. The tentacles that touched the coral quickly retracted and shrank, and the nem changed directions. The coral, OTOH, showed no reaction whatsoever.

If someone has actually seen different, then I'll concede that my case was the exception. Until then, I can't agree that it's normal for a nem to waste it's energy stinging everything it wanders into.

Makes sense. Why would the nem sting what it wont eat? Great opinion Mr. Bill.
