Unless their machine is old, you shouldn't really have an issue, so I guess it's something else.

Well today my Aqua C Remora Protein Skimmer comes in and I'm going to run the carbon in the filter sock where the water comes out of the filter so I hope this will help.

I also use a 200 micron filter sock but in addition to this I place a small piece of Poly-Filter in the bubble trap of my skimmers discharge for additional filtration. I change the PF when I do water changes and swap out the socks about every three days. My tank is 6' long and you can see through it no prob. I did experience cloudiness before which I narrowed down to a bacterial bloom. Just shortened the feedings and photoperiod for a few days and all was well again, best of luck.

You should be able to see through the side all the way through. Even if your tank is 6 feet long. Mine is 48" long and I can see through perfectly. Best bet is chemipure or carbon and a 200 micron filter sock.

It may also be your sand stirring the slightest bit from powerheads kicking stuff up and then it suspends indefinitely or until the overflow gets it. It could also be a bacteria bloom considering your tank is new. Sometimes spawning creates a cloudy tank. I had snails do that before, but the cloudiness clears after an hour. Other bacteria blooms have always been shorter than a week for me.
