I had another thread below, but think this question got lost in it. I have a 20g nano just set-up a week ago with crushed coral. I'm going to make a switch to sand, or mix with sand. Should I completely remove the crushed coral and replace with live sand? Or can I mix it? How deep? Thanks!

On a side note: I have a 10gal sump and no fuge. I was reading somewhere that I might be able to incorporate Cheato into the sump sort of like a fuge...

    Thoughts?

you can mix it. eventually all the sand will be on the bottom and the cc will be on top... so you probably don't want to mix it... I'd straight up replace it.

you can put chaeto in the sump, just have a light on a timer opposite your DT lights and it'll be good to go.

generally refugiums have pretty low flow... look for the lowest flow area of your sump. it's not ideal, but it should work alright.

personally I would completely remove the CC, you can mix them but the CC will eventually all get worked back to the top defeating the purpose again.

I would remove the CC it also causes problems in the future. I use it from time to time for fragging mushrooms, I just put a pile of it in the corner of the tank and lay a few mushrooms in a low flow area until they attach~

Switched to the sand this evening...wow what a task that was! But now I should be good to go...at least I hope I am. This is the stuff I used http://www.livesand.com/

Has anyone used it before and what kind of success? I got the "White #1" type. 20lbs in my 20g nano.

Thanks so much for everyone's great help and suggestions!
